Minimally invasive forms of cosmetic procedures and products, especially dermal fillers, have been enjoying an increase in popularity over the last few years. The levels of accessibility, safety, ease of use, combined with fast-acting results have caused the growth into what is expected to be a five-billion-dollar industry by the end of 2021. Among the many brands with dermal fillers product offerings, one of the best selling is Stylage.

In this article, we’ll break down everything you need to know about Stylage fillers and how they can help your patients achieve their desired look.

What are Stylage Fillers?

Stylage is a line of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that is created by Laboratoires Vivacy which is based in Paris, France. Laboratoires Vivacy came to be one of the first companies that decided to add anesthetic lidocaine and the natural antioxidant mannitol into their dermal fillers in order to impart additional benefits when using Stylage.

Their range of products all contain cross-linked hyaluronic acid as the main component with differing concentrations. The amount of hyaluronic acid in each variant can be between 16–26 mg/dL and this is largely dependent on how the dermal filler is going to be used and to what area of the body it will be injected into. The range of options gives medical practitioners an easier time finding the optimal dose to fight against the different signs of aging in their patients.

What are the different kinds of Stylage Fillers?

The different variations of the Stylage line have specific concentrations and formulations tailored to optimally treat different parts of the face.

  • Stylage S formula has a lighter texture, allowing it to be injected into tender areas of the face such as under the eyes. Because of this, it is best for treating dark circles under the eyes and superficial wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows, around the mouth, and on the cheeks.
  • Stylage M formula is more dense, allowing it to be used for shaping and for reaching deeper layers of the skin tissue. These qualities make it best for earlobe reshaping, nasal tip lifts, and hump reduction. It can also address the hollow temple area; sagging folds of skin; and moderate to severe wrinkles around the eyes, between the eyebrows, around the mouth, and on the cheeks.
  • Stylage L formula has an even denser structure, allowing it to be the best for treating extremely deep smile lines; treating volume loss through hand rejuvenation; and treating deep to extremely deep wrinkles around the eyes, eyebrows, mouth and on the cheeks.
  • Stylage XL & XXL formulas have the most density and are best for facial volume restoration, cheekbone augmentation, and facial contour creation.
  • Stylage Special Lips is specifically formulated for various lip enhancements as the lips are a more sensitive area of the face and have more blood flow. These enhancements include adding volume, contouring, smoothing fine lines, and hydration.
  • Stylage Hydro and Hydromax rely more on the hydrating effects of hyaluronic acid and can help rejuvenate the skin, making it look fresher, more elastic, and younger. This can be used in various areas including the face, neck, decolletage, and hands.

How do Stylage fillers work?

Hyaluronic acid is the main component of the majority of dermal fillers because of all the advantages that it brings:

  • It is a naturally occurring substance in the body, and is mostly found in the dermis of the skin. This means it is well-tolerated when injected into the body and has very low incidence of inflammatory response.
  • It has a strong affinity to water, meaning it can improve hydration of surrounding cells wherever it is injected.
  • It is viscoelastic, allowing these fillers to mimic the natural elasticity of the skin.
  • With the help of cross-linking, these fillers can last for up to 12 months.

Specifically for the Stylage fillers, these use a unique cross-linking process called IPN-like technology (IPN stands for interpenetrated cross-linked networks). This type of cross-linking involves binding two or more monophasic hyaluronic acid chains together using natural cross-linkers called hydrogen bridges. This creates a marked increase in the cohesion of the gel without having to add more chemical cross-linkers such as 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE).

Aside from the special cross-linking process of the hyaluronic acid component, the addition of the antioxidant mannitol adds an additional layer of protection for the surrounding cells and prolongs the effects of the dermal filler.

Normally, when a dermal filler is injected into the skin, the penetration into the skin and the injection of the dermal filler both elicit an inflammatory response that can release free radicals. These free radicals are one of the largest contributing factors to hyaluronic acid degradation as well as the degradation of skin cells, leading to signs of aging. Mannitol, as a natural antioxidant, has properties that allow it to seek out and directly combat free radicals, thus prolonging the effects of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers and reducing the degradation of skin cells.

And lastly, the addition of Lidocaine helps make the process more comfortable and painless for the patient.

All of these result in an effective and natural-looking dermal filler that provides immediate and long-lasting effects with minimal risk and few reactions.

What are the possible side effects from using Stylage fillers?

By itself, Stylage fillers have very minimal side effects due to the non-animal derived hyaluronic acid. The antioxidant mannitol further prevents other complications or facilitates faster recovery from some complications if any arise.

That said, there are still some possible side effects to watch out for that can be caused by injection technique, hypersensitivity to one or more components, or other factors.

  • Injection reactions are common and can include swelling, redness, tenderness, and discoloration of the injection site. This should go away without intervention within 10 days of the injection. A cooling pack may be used to reduce these symptoms.
  • Poor injection technique can also lead to some side effects such as bruising, nodules, discoloration, over/under-correction, or incorrect placement of the dermal filler. Depending on the unwanted effect, these may be treated with massaging the area, aspiration of the filler, or injecting hyaluronidase to completely dissolve the filler.
  • Hypersensitivity reactions such as redness, tenderness, itchiness, or swelling can occur within weeks to months after dermal filler injections. Stylage’s avoidance of using animal ingredients reduces the risk of this from occurring, but is still a possible side effect.
  • An uncommon but severe complication from using dermal fillers is its possible occlusion of surrounding blood vessels, which can lead to tissue necrosis. Usually the treatment for this would involve the use of a dermal filler remover such as hyaluronidase.

As with other dermal fillers, Stylage can’t completely guarantee no side effects. However, due to its unique composition, it distinguishes itself from its competitors by reducing the risks further while still providing high quality and natural-looking results that also last longer. Its multiple variants enhance these advantages by providing just the right formulation for each patient’s individual needs.
