A Guide to Setting up Medical Spa Membership Programs

David Fuller

Last Updated On: August 15, 2024

If you want to run a successful med spa, you need to make sure your patients come back for more treatments. Even a 5% increase in bookings can lead to a 25-95% increase in revenue. This is where medical spa membership programs can help.

Med spa memberships enable you to offer proactive customer support to existing clients. Your pre-paid members also don’t have to schedule regular appointments for any procedure—they can just walk in at any time, which makes getting treatments convenient for busy people.

But how do you set up a profitable med spa membership? What should it include? How should it be priced? We’ll talk about that and more in this article. Let’s get started.

Benefits of Setting up a Med Spa Membership Program

Here’s how med spa membership programs benefit your business:

1. Increased Patient Retention and Patient Lifetime Value

When your clients have already pre-paid for treatments, they’re more likely to return for regular consultations. For instance, a patient undergoing customized skin care solutions will be more likely to complete the entire course if they have pre-scheduled appointments.

They may also invest in other procedures, such as Botox treatments, through upgrading their membership, which can lead to a higher patient lifetime value (PLV).

For example, a patient who signs up for a basic membership may later upgrade to a premium med spa membership plan that offers significant discounts on laser and injectable procedures. This means you’ll have more customers who pay more over the long term.

2. Predictable Revenue Stream

Med spa memberships offset after-holiday (January to February) and high summer (July to September) booking slumps. They ensure customers are always coming in, which maintains a consistent cash flow.

For instance, if you’ve signed up 25 clients for a six-month membership plan that includes regular monthly facials, Botox treatments, and filler touch-ups, they’ll be more likely to come in during the hotter months because they’ve already paid.

3. Reduced Admin Burden

Instead of calling each customer to schedule an appointment or having them call you every month, your membership management software will do that for you. You’ll also be able to handle appointment reminders, treatment tracking, recurring payments, and HIPAA compliance from one dashboard.

This will also help you better predict the demand for products and services. As an example, knowing how many of your members will require Botox, Juvederm, or Restylane will help you order the right amount, reduce the risk of overstocking or shortages, and lower waste.

Customer support will also become easier. You can find and deal with patient complaints faster than when someone calls your help desk every day. This reduces the risk of silent sign-offs—which is when patients leave without saying anything.

How to Create a Successful Med Spa Membership Program?

Now that you know why med spa membership programs work, let’s look at how to set one up:

1. Figure Out Who You Want to Target

Before choosing the type of membership program you want to offer, take a look at your patient base, current service offerings, and business goals. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What are our most and least in-demand services? (You won’t include the latter in your memberships.)
  • What are our most and least expensive services?
  • What treatments do we want to sell more of?
  • What services do our patients want from us? (e.g., bundles, discounts, etc.)
  • What are our goals for the membership program?

2. Find the Right Med Spa Membership Model

Once you know what you want to offer, you need to fit those wants into a membership model that sells. You could either go with tiered or specialized memberships.

Tiered memberships are paid monthly and have perks that increase as the monthly rate increases. For instance, you may offer a free Sculptra treatment per year for those in the highest tier and fillers for those in the lowest.

In contrast, specialized memberships focus on one service category and usually don’t have tiers. For instance, your specialized membership offer could focus only on anti-aging treatments like Botox injections, microneedling sessions, or chemical peels.

However, these memberships will only interest clients who are looking for specific outcomes and very rarely new clients due to their specialization.

3. Price Your Program Based on the Services You Provide

After you’ve decided on your membership model, you need to price it so that members come in, not go out. This means including your least expensive services in the lowest tier, the mid-range services in the second tier, and the most expensive in the highest tier.

Here’s what this would look like:

  • Basic—Simple facials, light chemical peels, LED light therapy, dermaplaning, hand or foot treatments, etc.
  • Premium—Hydrafacials, IPL/laser/electrolysis, signature facials, deep tissue massages, etc.
  • VIP—Gold facials, medical-grade peels, laser skin resurfacing, CoolSculpting, microneedling with radiofrequency, Kybella/Belkyra, Sculptra, etc.

You could also add a discount to all tiers, with the percentage increasing from basic to VIP. Also consider adding special discounts in basic plans, such as two-for-one deals, to engage more clients.

4. Automate the Process

Instead of having someone sit at the backend and process all membership fees, appointments, and other admin tasks, set up membership management software to automate the sign-up and retention processes.

You could also set up automatic emails—maybe even a newsletter—using Beehiv, Mailchimp, or ConvertKit that go out every week or month to get your clients to sign up for your membership. This is where marketing comes in.

5. Market, Market, Market

You need to market your membership plans so that they get picked up by your clients. While email newsletters help you do this, you want to widen your campaign for the most effects. For instance, you could post on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok about your memberships.

You could also create holiday specials, such as a steep discount on your annual package, to lock in temporary clients and turn them into long-term ones. Also, make sure to train your on-site staff to pitch memberships to your clients.
