Hymovis is an injectable gel that is used to treat pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. Made of proprietary and highly modified hyaluronan that has enhanced lubricating and shock absorption abilities, Hymovis can provide long-lasting pain relief in a simple two-injection regimen. Hymovis is a product of Fidia Pharma.

What does this product come with?
A pack of Hymovis comes with two single-use 5ml syringes that each contain a 3ml dose of treatment; these doses should be injected one week apart. Each syringe is labeled Hymovis for identification. The contents of the syringe are sterile and non-pyrogenic. The syringe components do not contain latex.
What are the benefits of this product?
This FDA-approved injectable gel alleviates the pain associated with knee osteoarthritis with long-lasting efficacy. The gel is formulated via a proprietary process that results in a product with superior biomechanical properties for increased joint lubrication and residence time.
How does this product work?
Hymovis is a gel-like solution with viscoelastic properties similar to the synovial fluid in the knee joint. In patients with knee osteoarthritis, the synovial fluid declines in concentration and quality, resulting in altered rheological properties that reduces its lubricating and cushioning capabilities. This exacerbates the disease, leading to pain and restricting the patient’s range of motion.
Hymovis is a viscoelastic gel used for viscosupplementation; in other words, it is administered to the knee to supplement the synovial fluid in the affected knee, thereby restoring lubrication and shock absorption to said knee. With these effects, pain is reduced. Hymovis is formulated to have enhanced biomechanical capabilities that allow it to have greater elasticity, viscosity, and joint residence time.
Hymovis is manufactured without any cross-linking agents and is made from bacterial hyaluronic acid, further increasing its safety and tolerability profile.
What are the ingredients?
Hymovis consists of a gel-like solution consisting of hyaluronan (HYADD4) at a concentration of 8mg/ml that is dissolved in physiologic saline. Each dose of Hymovis is 3ml.
How to inject/administer this product
Hymovis should only be administered by a qualified physician trained in accepted injection techniques for delivering intra-articular injections. When injecting, strict aseptic injection guidelines should be followed. Before administering Hymovis, it is recommended to remove joint effusion with an 18–20-gauge needle. The same needle can be used for injecting Hymovis, but it is not recommended to use the same syringe. The needle can be attached to the syringe by first twisting and then lifting off the latter’s tip cap; the twisting action helps minimize product leakage. The needle should be securely attached, but care should to taken to not overtighten or use excessive force during the attachment process, as either of these actions could cause the syringe tip to break. Inject the full 3ml dose into one knee. If both knees are being treated, a separate syringe should be used for the other knee. The second injection should be administered to the same joint one week after the first injection.
When should I use this product?
Hymovis is administered in a two-injection regimen, and these doses should be given one week apart. The injection session is a fairly quick procedure.
What areas can I treat with this product?
Hymovis is approved to treat pain related to osteoarthritis of the knee. The safety and effectiveness of Hymovis treatment in joints other than the knee have not been studied. As the hyaluronic acid in this product is derived from non-avian sources, no allergy testing is necessary.
How long do results last?
The majority of patients will experience up to six months of pain relief from Hymovis treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is an ideal candidate for this product?
This product is intended for patients who have joint pain from knee osteoarthritis and have failed to attain adequate pain relief from first-line therapies like exercise, physical therapy, or simple painkillers. Hymovis is not suitable for patients with a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronate preparations or gram-positive bacterial proteins. As well, Hymovis should not be injected into skin with infections or skin diseases in the area of the injection site or joint.
Why should I purchase this product?
Hymovis consists of high molecular weight hyaluronan that has the ideal viscoelastic properties to provide better cushioning and lubrication for the diseased knee joint, where this medication reduces pain.
Are there any side effects?
An injection of Hymovis commonly causes reactions like arthralgia, transient pain, and swelling. These effects are usually mild and temporary, as they tend to subside within a few days. No serious adverse events or pseudoseptic reactions have been reported with the use of Hymovis. Transient increases in inflammation following any intraarticular hyaluronan injection have been reported in some patients with pre-existing inflammatory joint conditions.
